31 Days of Self-Care

If you’re beginning to feel burned out, exhausted, unhappy, and uninspired, there is a simple solution that is very often overlooked: self-care. Taking time for yourself may seem unrealistic or impossible at times, but for those who are busy and stressed, it is essential. Self-care will help you clear your mind and allow you time to step away and recharge to make you feel like you can take on the world again. In such a connected, busy society, it’s hard to remember to practice self-care. But with these tips, you’ll be on your way to a more peaceful state of mind.

Many times, we fail at self-care because it’s hard to put ourselves first. When it comes down to it, it can feel like a selfish act to take care of your needs above all else, leaving you feeling guilty. Especially when you have children or responsibilities that seem impossible for you to put aside for just 30 minutes. But - it is possible to balance your responsibilities while taking time for self-love.

The Importance of Self-Care

Maria Baratta Ph.D., L.C.S.W. describes self-care as, “The mindful taking of time to pay attention to you, not in a narcissistic way, but in a way that ensures that you are being cared for by you.” Although self-care may look different for each one of us, self-care is simply taking the time to take care of yourself and recharge.

Remember-you need to take time for yourself or your body will force you to. Not stopping to take care of your needs can have harmful effects on your health including lowered immune system and higher levels of stress and unhappiness. One study found higher rates of depression in those who practiced infrequent self-care, as little as an hour per week.
