Practicing Wellness While Social Distancing

Everyone reacts differently to stress. The Coronavirus pandemic has generally caused a lot of understandable worry, anxiety, stress, and feelings of being overwhelmed. Taking the precautionary measures recommended by the CDC, to socially distance yourself and regularly wash your hands, can keep you safe and physically healthy. But what are you doing to ensure that you’re mentally and emotionally okay?

Are you practicing self-care, nurturing your relationships, taking necessary breaks, etc. to make sure you’re not going stir crazy? Taking charge of caring for yourself and your wellbeing is much more important now than ever. Focusing on staying healthy physically, mentally, and emotionally can all contribute to keeping your stress down.

Here are some tips to practicing wellness during quarantine:

Maintain Your Normal Routine

Although difficult, try to maintain your normal routine as much as possible while you socially distance yourself. Don’t let being “stuck at home” take control of everything you were doing before. You may need to make a few changes like bringing out your yoga mat and pulling out your laptop for a virtual yoga class or working remotely instead of at your office, but don’t stop doing all of the things you normally do in your daily life.

Focus On The Positive

Even though with this crisis comes a lot of negativity and fear, there also comes a lot of positive growth and hope. There are so many things to be thankful for that we may otherwise mindlessly overlook. Our amazing friends and family, spending extra time with our kids, our environment, pets, health, the list goes on. We need to focus on moments of positivity we experience daily. Take a minute to look outside, take a walk, or go out on your porch for a moment. Soak up the sun rays and be present in the beauty of the world that surrounds you. Taking a moment to appreciate your surroundings so you can clear your mind and allow you to think more positively.

Get Enough Sleep & Eat Well

Healthy habits are important to healthy immune functioning, and that includes sleep habits and the foods you eat!

Be sure to keep up with the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night. If you’re having a difficult time sleeping, focus on relaxing instead of sleeping. Xen may also help you reach a state of deep relaxation and improve your quality of sleep.

If your local grocery stores permit, incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your diet like bananas, leafy greens, oranges, and avocados, can help you fight illness. Make sure you’re still getting 2-3 meals a day and are trying to incorporate healthy foods into your cooking. Also remember to take your daily vitamins to get that extra boost of Vitamin C and Zinc!

Keep Your Mind Busy - With Positive Activities

Sometimes the best distraction from self-distancing is productivity. Make self-care a priority and take actions to mindfully practice it. Here are some ideas to keep your mind busy:

  • Learn a new recipe
  • Start a house project
  • Journal
  • Read a book
  • Focus on work
  • Make a bucket list
  • Some museums are hosting virtual tours
  • Play games or do a puzzle
  • Get creative with a new craft
  • Xen while you zen

Stay Active

Exercise can help relieve stress, lower blood pressure, and improves your heart and lung functioning. Be sure to take breaks throughout the day to take a short walk and get some fresh air. Also, just because we’re in quarantine doesn’t mean you can’t keep up with your gym/workout routine. Create a makeshift home fitness studio and schedule time to get a workout in. Many personal trainers or classes are going online for the time being, so check with your gym and see if they offer virtual classes. If not, there are tons of videos of workout routines online, or you can write your own workouts!

Keep Socializing

We live in a world with so many technological advancements, it’s hard to keep up sometimes! That being said, while we’re social distancing, we don’t have to be alone! Because of our amazing apps and technologies we can FaceTime, zoom call, email, phone call, the list goes on, to stay in touch with each other. Don’t forget to reach out to others in this time of need. Reaching out will help us all feel a little more connected and a little less alone.

Remember to unplug from your phone and the TV at times. Sometimes a short news/social media detox and time to practice self-care, are just what you need!

Managing Your Remote Work/Life Balance

If you can’t imagine fitting any of these activities in because you’re exhausted from the hours you’re spending at work, share your situation with someone. Get it off your chest and let others know. Now is a time when our communities are pulling together and people want to help. If you don’t have time to shop for food or pick up essentials, there are so many neighbors who are willing to run errands or pitch in their talents in other ways. You can reach out through social platforms like the Nextdoor App, Front Porch Forum, and My Coop. None of us should feel completely alone. We’re all adjusting to our temporary “new normal” and we can help one another.
