The way we react to uncertainty can differ from person to person. Some will experience very little stress, taking situations as they come and improvising while others may experience anxiety and confusion on what to do or where to go from there.
The reality is, our brains are wired to respond to uncertainty with fear. But there’s good news! You have the power over how you react to situations, and there are a lot of ways you can deal with the stresses of uncertainty.
Ways to Handle Uncertainty
- Reflect and analyze. Surely this isn’t the first time you felt stressed by uncertainty in your life. It’s a part of life. But since you’ve experienced uncertainty, you have an advantage. You are able to reflect on the other times you felt uncertain, analyze what worked and what didn’t, and uncover patterns that may help make you feel less stressed in the current situation and situations that arise in the future.
- Think of a few possible outcomes. Although you may not feel prepared in the moment, thinking of different possible outcomes to the situation may make you feel more prepared for what’s to come.
- Look for the best in the situation. If you’ve experienced anxiety, you know that a lot of times you worry about things that don’t even occur. Thinking about the future in a worst-case-scenario point of view may not be the best way to think about events. Staying positive in stressful situations will make your confidence skyrocket, and you’ll feel more calm going into the situation.
- Keep an open mind. When you let go and keep an open mind, you realize there are so many beautiful possibilities. With possibility comes change, and although change can be scary, it can also bring opportunities.
Understand What You Can Control
Although we have little control over others or how situations can play out sometimes, there are things you can control. When you feel uncertain or unusually stressed, remember these things you do have control over:
- Your reaction to situations.
- Your feelings.
- What you say.
- How you treat people.
